This inconspicuous white tablet began its journey through pharmaceutical history in the late 19th century. At that time quinine was the main treatment for fevers and there was a scarcity of the drug. The need for a synthetic substitute arose and N-acetyl-P (commonly known as Paracetamol) was discovered. Rigorous clinical studies were carried out and Panadol was finally launched by Sterling Drug Inc. in 1955 as a tablet containing 500mg of Paracetamol.
Panadol was introduced into Malaysia in 1957 and by 1962 Sterling Drug Malaysia had started its business here. They marketed the brand through hospitals initially, gaining acceptance from the medical community. By the Seventies, the brand had gained enormous popularity and could be found anywhere from pharmacies to supermarkets and clinics. It has become the foremost OTC pain reliever in the country.
